Position Summary:
This position is primarily responsible for assisting with all aspects of the Mitacs Business Strategy project as assigned. The Community Inquiry Intern will create a resource of community groups in Yorkton and area to share with newcomers and other community organizations. The intern will gather information on how newcomer involvement in community organizations affects newcomers’ interest and willingness to remain in Yorkton and area. The intern will work with the Local Immigration Partnership Coordinator for the East Central Saskatchewan Immigration Partnership at the East Central Newcomer Welcome Centre (ECNWC). The intern will attend meetings with community organizations and meet members of local groups to create a resource of community organizations in Yorkton and area that provide services to newcomers that can be shared internally at ECNWC and other organizations in Yorkton and area.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Main Responsibilities:
➢ Work to complete the Business Strategy Internship project as submitted to Mitacs with the support of the business partner and the College’s Job Coach.
➢ Complete the Mitacs Employability Skills course.
➢ Gather information from community organizations on housing, employment, language learning, and social integration opportunities for newcomers
➢ Identify gaps in, or barriers to, services observed by community organizations when providing services to newcomers
➢ Create a report describing how community services assist newcomer settlement
➢Use the information gathered to provide recommendations to ECNWC on how to improve outreach, programs, and service delivery
2. Additional Duties:
➢Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Education and Experience:
➢ The minimum educational qualification for this position is equivalent to the admission to a program offered at Suncrest College.
➢ Active student with a post-secondary institution or a recent graduate (within the past 12 months).
➢ The minimum amount of practical, related experience required to perform the duties of this position is less than one year.
➢ Demonstrated experience working in a cross-cultural environment.
2. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
➢ Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills to work within a multi-disciplinary team.
➢ Strong written communication skills.
➢ Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.
➢ Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
➢ Some travel to rural locations may be required.
3. Other Requirements:
➢ Valid Saskatchewan Driver’s license is required
➢ Satisfactory Criminal Record Check required
➢ Valid work permit for the duration of the internship required
