3rd Annual Indigenous Birth Support Worker Year End Culture Camp Celebration

June 26, 2025

The Indigenous Birth Support Worker Certification Program (IBWC) celebrated its 3rd annual year-end culture camp celebration on June 6–8, 2025, at the nēwoskan Traditional Campus, located in St. Louis, SK, approximately 30 minutes south of Prince Albert. Seven students from the 2025 Winter term participated, along with faculty and invited Elders and Knowledge Keepers, who aided in the transmission of traditional knowledge and practices.

The Indigenous Birth Support Worker Certificate Program (IBWC) is an 18-credit program offered at three campuses, with a portion of the coursework completed remotely, and includes online components. Students can take this program full-time over two terms or part-time across one to two years.

The program focuses on enhancing and supporting current and future health professionals to deliver culturally safe and holistic services.

The program intends to:

  • Provide training in local and place-based Indigenous practices in childbirth and pre-and post-natal care for Indigenous birthers and families in Saskatchewan First Nations communities.
  • Work with primary care services to include aspects of land-based birthing into Western health practice.
