On September 24, 2026, the FNUniv community came together for the Annual Smudge Walk at the Regina Campus.
The day began with a community Pipe Ceremony, followed by a Truth & Reconciliation Program, which included remarks from sponsors and leaders of FNUniv and the University of Regina, as well as heartfelt reflections from Sharon Strongarm, an Indian Residential School Survivor. FNUniv gifted Mrs. Strongarm with a star blanket to acknowledge and thank her for sharing such personal lifelong memories.
After the program, more than 100 students, staff, faculty, and community members participated in the Smudge Walk across the University of Regina campus. The walk was led by the FNUniv Regina campus oskâpêwis (helper), along with the campus Knowledge Keeper, eagle staff carrier, flag bearers, and hand drum singers, who sang the honour songs throughout the 30-minute walk. Once everyone returned to campus, a BBQ lunch was ready before the Late Tony Cote Welcome Back Traditional Powwow commenced.
We extend our gratitude to everyone who joined us in honouring Indian Residential School Survivors, remembering those who did not return home, and creating a meaningful space for remembrance, reflection, and community.
We sincerely appreciate the event sponsors: K+S Potash Canada, the University of Regina, and the Saskatchewan Community Foundation. We also thank our T-shirt sponsor, The Co-operators, and our water sponsor, Scotiabank, for supporting this year’s Smudge Walk.
