Appointment of Associate Vice President, Health and Research

March 17, 2026

First Nations University of Canada is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Jessica Kolopenuk (ᐋᐧᐱᐢᑭ ᒦᑲᐧᐣ wâpiski-mîkwan, bear clan) who is Ininiw/Cree from Peguis First Nation as the inaugural Associate Vice President – Health and Research, effective May 1, 2026.

In her new role as Associate Vice President – Health and Research, Dr. Kolopenuk will provide strategic leadership for research initiatives at FNUniv. She will work closely with faculty, students, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community partners to strengthen Indigenous-led research environments, expand partnerships, and support the development of research that advances the health and wellbeing of Indigenous peoples.

Dr. Kolopenuk was born and raised in Winnipeg and southern Saskatchewan, including having attended high school at the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame. Before pursuing an academic career, she played varsity hockey and won two national championships with the University of Alberta Pandas. She continues to maintain a strong passion for sport and believes in the role that athletics can play in strengthening leadership, wellness, and community. She hopes to bring this perspective into her work at FNUniv. Outside of her professional work, she enjoys spending time with her golden retriever, Midas and is looking forward to raising a new puppy once settled in Regina.

First Nations University of Canada welcomes Dr. Kolopenuk to this important leadership role and looks forward to the contributions she will bring to advancing the university’s mission in Indigenous education, research, and community engagement.
