Connecting with Indigenous Students at the Annual Soaring Gathering

May 15, 2026

From May 12 to 13, 2026, Josh Lavalley, the Work Integrated Learning Coordinator at the First Nations University of Canada, attended the Indspire Soaring: Indigenous Youth Empowerment Gathering in Halifax, NS.

This national event brought together over 1,000 Indigenous high school students from across the country, empowering them to explore post-secondary pathways, career opportunities, and the available support services.

At the career fair, Josh connected with enthusiastic students eager to learn about their future options. He shared information about the academic programs, student supports, and the unique learning environment at FNUniv. These discussions revealed a strong interest in culturally grounded education, emphasizing the critical importance of Indigenous institutions at events like Soaring.

Throughout the gathering, students participated in inspiring panels, workshops, and cultural programming, hearing directly from Indigenous leaders, educators, and professionals. The emphasis on culture, community, and empowerment created an uplifting atmosphere where youth could envision themselves pursuing promising educational and career paths.

Overall, Soaring 2026 was a transformative experience, providing invaluable opportunities to engage with prospective students, build meaningful relationships, and support Indigenous youth as they take their next steps.
