FNUniv Faculty Members and Staff Participate in the SICC’s First Nations Language Keepers Gathering

January 18, 2024

On January 17th and 18th, the Saskatchewan Indigenous Cultural Centre hosted the “Our Sacred Languages Walk with Us” First Nations Language Keepers Gathering at the Ramada Plaza in Regina. The event featured two days of informative speakers, including Dr. Kevin Lewis, as well as engaging workshops and panels that explored the revitalization and history of First Nations languages. Participants gained practical and insightful steps for language revitalization.

We were thrilled to have some of our faculty and staff members participate in the event. Lynn Cote, Darian Agecoutay, and Natalie Langan were among the featured speakers. Lynn Cote led a Saulteaux Workshop titled “My Ancestors Walk with Me Through Language,” while Natalie Langan and Darian Agecoutay participated in a Learner’s Panel.

The gathering brought together Language Keepers from all First Nations language communities to celebrate the significance of community, language, and culture. It was the first in-person gathering since 2019, offering attendees the opportunity to hear the languages spoken live. Educators, Elders, and advocates joined the event, connecting and sharing valuable insights into language revitalization.
