FNUniv Faculty and Alumni Featured in CBC Radio Discussion Marking 50 Years

The First Nations University of Canada (FNUniv) was recently featured on CBC Radio’s Blue Sky in a special episode reflected on 50 years since the institution first opened its doors as the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College.

Hosted by Leisha Grebinksi, the May 19 broadcast brought together voices with deep ties to FNUniv’s history and development, including longtime Indigenous Studies professor Dr. Blair Stonechild, retired Indigenous Languages professor Soloman Ratt, former SIFC Board of Governors Doug Cuthand, and FNUni alumna and CBC journalist Darla Ponace.

The conversation revisited FNUniv’s beginnings in 1976, when the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College opened with a small number of students and programs grounded in the principle of Indigenous control over Indigenous education. Guests reflected on the early challenges of building a new institution, the important role of Elders in shaping its direction, and the steady growth that led to its expansion into a multi-campus university in Regina, Saskatoon, and Prince Albert.
