Learning More Than the Cree Language at the pimâcihitâtân nêhiyawêwin Conference

October 8, 2026

Saskatoon Campus students from Cree 100 S50 and Indigenous Studies 208 S50 attended the 4th annual pimâcihitâtân nêhiyawêwin Conference at Dakota Dunes Resort on Whitecap Dakota First Nation.

The two-day conference, presented by YXE Cree Speakers Society: Keep Our Language Alive, took place on September 28 & 29, 2026.

The students heard nêhiyawêwin spoken throughout by many highly esteemed presenters, who shared important messages and ways to revitalize the nêhiyawêwin language. They also had the opportunity to practice greetings by introducing themselves to others in nêhiyawêwin. This experience has impacted our students in many ways as they work to reclaim nêhiyawêwin and nêhiyaw identity.

Students also volunteered to help Elders find seating, brought them coffee/tea and meals as needed, and had lunch with the attendees. Students and faculty are deeply grateful for the sponsorship that enabled our students to attend the conference.

Cree 100, taught by Dr. Norine Tourangeau, and Indigenous Studies 208, taught by Dr. Miriam McNab, have committed to collaborating to revitalize the Cree language.
