Alumni Spotlight: Meet Cindy Burns and Destiny Martin

At First Nations University of Canada, our alumni carry the lessons, values, and connections from their time on campus into every aspect of life. Each graduate’s journey is a testament to resilience, culture, and purpose, showing how Indigenous knowledge and community continue to shape meaningful contributions far beyond the classroom.

Cindy Burns

Cindy chose First Nations University of Canada because she believes education should be rooted in community, culture, and responsibility. She was drawn to a learning environment that honours Indigenous knowledge, challenges colonial systems, and prepares students to give back in meaningful ways.

During her time at FNUniv, Cindy experienced a profound personal transformation. Through ceremonies, cultural teachings, and reconnecting with her traditions, she deepened her understanding of herself and found a renewed sense of purpose. She credits these experiences with shaping both her healing journey and the way she serves her community today.

Now living in Oregon, Cindy is a mother, is completing her Master of Social Work at the University of Victoria, and works in a reunification program focused on preventing child removal. She will soon begin a counselling internship, continuing her commitment to healing, growth, and supporting Indigenous families and communities.

Destiny Martin

Destiny chose First Nations University of Canada because of its strong foundation in Indigenous perspectives and culturally grounded learning. Throughout her studies, she embraced opportunities to participate in ceremonies and cultural practices that helped her view education through a First Nations lens.

One of Destiny’s most memorable experiences was attending Culture Camp, where she learned from Elders, helped set up a teepee, created traditional crafts, and built lasting relationships with classmates. These experiences strengthened her connection to culture and community while reinforcing the values she carries into her work today.

Since graduating, Destiny has built a career in both child welfare and mental health before joining a modern treaty land claim organization, where she now works in service of her own community. She is also pursuing her Master of Social Work at the University of Regina and has begun work on her thesis, continuing to build on the foundation she established at FNUniv.
