Alumni Spotlight: Meet Erroll Kinistino and Mick Favel

September 14, 2026

At First Nations University of Canada, our alumni carry the lessons, values, and connections from their time on campus into every aspect of life. Each graduate’s journey is a testament to resilience, culture, and purpose, showing how Indigenous knowledge and community continue to shape meaningful contributions far beyond the classroom.

Through our Alumni Spotlight series, we highlight FNUniv graduates who are leading with heart, inspiring change, and uplifting communities. Each story reflects the spirit of We are Indigenous — celebrating identity, heritage, and the impact of Indigenous-led learning.

Erroll Kinistino

Program: Indigenous Communication & Arts
Community: Ochapowace First Nation
Graduation Year: 1988

Words of advice: Don’t be afraid, just do it. Share yourself with others.

One word to describe FNUniv: Enlightening.

Erroll chose FNUniv, then known as the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College, because he wanted to attend a university where he could learn alongside fellow Indigenous students. His time at FNUniv expanded his knowledge and understanding of Indigenous issues while helping him recognize the significance of higher education and the opportunities it can create.

Some of Erroll’s most memorable experiences came through student life and the sense of community he found outside the classroom. Talent shows, dances, and other extracurricular activities gave students opportunities to come together, build friendships, and enjoy their time at university. These experiences helped create a strong sense of connection and made his time at FNUniv especially meaningful.

Since graduating, Erroll has built an extensive career in media and entertainment. He spent 15 years working on productions including North of 60, Corner Gas, and Out in the Cold, and has represented and emceed a variety of events across Canada. He has also appeared on talk shows and podcasts, continuing to share his experiences and voice across the media and entertainment landscape.

Mick Favel

Program: Indigenous Communication & Arts
Community: Kawacatoose First Nation
Graduation Year: 2019

Words of advice: Eat good, sleep well, exercise regularly! A semester is like a marathon. Taking care of yourself goes a long way!

One phrase to describe FNUniv: I am thankful for the experience FNUniv has given me..

Mick chose FNUniv because both of his parents attended SIFC, making it a meaningful and natural part of his educational journey. During his time at FNUniv, Mick experienced significant academic growth and developed a lasting passion for Indigenous history and learning. The FNUniv Library became an important part of that experience, helping him develop his skills as a writer and student while sparking an interest in reading about Indigenous history and topics that continues today.

Mick also values the friendships and connections he made at FNUniv. He remembers the university as a place where he built relationships that have lasted beyond graduation, and he still enjoys returning to the building and reconnecting with the community. One particularly memorable moment came in 2022, when FNUniv celebrated the graduating classes whose convocations had been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Mick appreciated that the university took the time to recognize those graduates and celebrate their accomplishments.

Today, Mick works as a journalist in the news industry, focusing on Indigenous issues and stories that affect people and communities across Saskatchewan. His work has taken him to First Nations communities throughout southern Saskatchewan, where he reports on local issues and helps share the voices and experiences of the people he meets.
