Alumni Spotlight: Meet Kiauna Cote and Tracey George Heese

March 4, 2026

At First Nations University of Canada, our alumni carry the lessons, values, and connections from their time on campus into every aspect of life. Each graduate’s journey is a testament to resilience, culture, and purpose, showing how Indigenous knowledge and community continue to shape meaningful contributions far beyond the classroom.

Through our Alumni Spotlight series, we highlight FNUniv graduates who are leading with heart, inspiring change, and uplifting communities. Each story reflects the spirit of We are Indigenous — celebrating identity, heritage, and the impact of Indigenous-led learning.

Kiauna Cote

Program: Indigenous Business & Public Administration
Community: Ochapowace First Nation
Graduation Year: 2022

Words of advice: Don’t give up. Keep going. It’s so simple but that’s what our old ones would want for us to keep going in any path we chose.

One word to describe FNUniv: Priceless

Kiauna always knew FNUniv would be her home. Her late father, an Indigenous Education graduate, used to take her and her brother to class by bus, where her misōmis, Tony Cote, would watch over them. Those early memories — and the encouragement she received from her family — shaped her path and sense of belonging.

She describes FNUniv as offering some of the strongest Indigenous programs in the country — not because people are studying Indigenous life, but because Indigenous people lead with experience and heart, She credits FNUniv with her giving confidence, pride and growth as an Indigenous woman. The values, community care, and everyday acts of support — even something as simple as sharing food after class — made it a place where she felt fed in more ways than one.

After completing her degree program at FNUniv, Kiauna earned a BA in Law & Society at the University of Calgary and is now in her second year of a Juris Doctor at the University of Saskatchewan. She has worked with national organizations, in corporate spaces, and in policy — carrying forward the pride, intelligence, and values she says extend far beyond Western standards.

Tracey George Heese

Program: Indigenous Education
Community: Ochapowace First Nation
Graduation Year: 1994

Words of advice: Keep striving, keep showing up, ask for help. Tutors are there to help you. Share your voice, as to what your family have taught you, and pass knowledge forward.

One word to describe FNUniv: Incredible

Tracey chose FNUniv because it was the first Indigenous college-university program to offer Indigenous Education. Guided by Indigenous professors and land-based learning, she experienced education tat reflected her identity and culture, strengthening her sense of belonging.

Since 2001, Tracey has shared her Cultural Arts expertise — sewing, beading, and creating Star Blankets — through partnership with organizations like the Regina Multicultural Council, local schools and the RCMP Heritage Centre. Most recently, she contributed a dress to The Place of Reflection exhibition, continuing to uplift culture and community through her work.

Looking ahead, Tracey remains committed to using her skills to celebrate, preserve and share Indigenous knowledge and creativity across communities.
