Alumni Spotlight: Meet Laurie McAdam and Robert Cote Jr.

May 26, 2026

At First Nations University of Canada, our alumni carry the lessons, values, and connections from their time on campus into every aspect of life. Each graduate’s journey is a testament to resilience, culture, and purpose, showing how Indigenous knowledge and community continue to shape meaningful contributions far beyond the classroom.

Through our Alumni Spotlight series, we highlight FNUniv graduates who are leading with heart, inspiring change, and uplifting communities. Each story reflects the spirit of We are Indigenous — celebrating identity, heritage, and the impact of Indigenous-led learning.

Laurie McAdam

Program: Indigenous Business & Public Administration
Community: Big River First Nation
Graduation Year: 2019

Words of advice: Life is hard, but it’s only as hard as you make it. One step and one change can change your life forever.

One word to describe FNUniv: Unreal.

Laurie chose First Nations University of Canada because it provided a culturally appropriate learning environment where she felt a sense of belonging. After feeling out of place at other institutions, she found a space at FNUniv that supported her personal, cultural, and academic growth.

Through her studies, Laurie gained a deeper understanding of her identity and the history that shaped her experiences. Learning more about herself and her culture became an important part of her healing journey, helping her reconnect with who she is and where she comes from. She credits FNUniv with giving her the opportunity to find herself while building confidence in her path forward.

What Laurie values most about being an FNUniv graduate is the understanding she gained of her identity and community. Since graduating in 2019, she has built a successful career in finance, completed her MBA in 2025, and expanded her work into economic development—an area she is deeply passionate about. Through her continued education and professional growth, Laurie carries forward the knowledge, resilience, and sense of purpose she developed at FNUniv.

Robert Cote Jr.

Program: Indigenous Studies
Community: Ochapowace First Nation
Graduation Year: 2025

Words of advice: Don’t give up, no matter what happens or how many times you have to come back. Honour your Treaty right to education and make education your buffalo.

One word to describe FNUniv: Rewarding.

Robert’s journey to First Nations University of Canada was inspired by his late father, an FNUniv alumnus and educator who dedicated his life to teaching in First Nations communities. His father often reminded him that “education is the buffalo,” a teaching that continues to guide Robert’s work and purpose today.

At FNUniv, Robert experienced meaningful personal, cultural, and academic growth in a learning environment where culture, ceremony, and smudging were woven into everyday life. He appreciated the supportive atmosphere, the friendships he built, and memorable moments such as semester-end potlucks that fostered a strong sense of community and belonging.

Since graduating with a degree in Indigenous Studies in 2025, Robert has continued his commitment to supporting Indigenous families and youth. After working with young people through Rainbow Youth Centre, he now serves as a Family Safety Liaison Worker with Chief Red Bear Children’s Lodge. He is also continuing his Bachelor of Education studies and hopes to further the legacy of service and education that inspired him to begin his journey.
