Alumni Spotlight: Meet Robert Belley and Rebecca Sangwais

June 15, 2026

At First Nations University of Canada, our alumni carry the lessons, values, and connections from their time on campus into every aspect of life. Each graduate’s journey is a testament to resilience, culture, and purpose, showing how Indigenous knowledge and community continue to shape meaningful contributions far beyond the classroom.

Through our Alumni Spotlight series, we highlight FNUniv graduates who are leading with heart, inspiring change, and uplifting communities. Each story reflects the spirit of We are Indigenous — celebrating identity, heritage, and the impact of Indigenous-led learning.

Robert Belley

Program: Indigenous Social Work
Community: Cote First Nation
Graduation Year: 2023

Words of advice: If you’re struggling with your studies, reach out to an Elder; they are there to help! Utilize the smudge room.

One phrase to describe FNUniv: Life-changing experience.

Robert’s journey at First Nations University of Canada was shaped by meaningful relationships with fellow students and mentors, particularly graduate social work students Gilbert Kewstep and Dexter Armand Kitchemonia. He describes his experience at FNUniv as extraordinary, filled with opportunities to learn, grow, and deepen his understanding of culture and community.

One of Robert’s most memorable experiences was helping save the life of an eagle while attending a Culture Camp. Through his involvement at camp, he also worked closely with Knowledge Keeper Gilbert Kewstep, who shared cultural teachings that left a lasting impact and eventually led Robert to become a camp crier. These experiences strengthened his connection to culture and reinforced the importance of community leadership and service.

Today, Robert continues to give back through community-based work. He has supported camps with organizations such as the John Howard Society and social work programs, and founded the Saskatoon Sage Clan, a grassroots initiative that provides food, clothing, and support to people experiencing homelessness. He says knowing FNUniv continues to stand beside him, even after graduation, remains one of the things he values most about being an alumnus.

Rebecca Sangwais

Program: Indigenous Business & Public Administration
Community: Ochapowace First Nation
Graduation Year: 2014

Words of advice: Lean into the support around you—you were never meant to walk this journey alone. There are so many people cheering you on. Be proud of who you are and the experiences that shaped you, because your story has the power to make a difference in your community, family, and beyond.

One word to describe FNUniv: Transformative.

Rebecca chose First Nations University of Canada because she wanted to be part of an Indigenous community and find a stronger sense of belonging. Having attended school in town growing up, she longed to be surrounded by like-minded people who understood her experiences and shared her values.

At FNUniv, Rebecca found more than an education. She built lasting relationships with peers, professors, and staff while developing an even deeper pride in her Indigenous identity. Through feasts, round dances, and campus events, she experienced a strong sense of community where she felt seen, respected, and celebrated. She credits FNUniv with helping her learn how to integrate culture into a western world while remaining grounded in who she is and where she comes from.

Since graduating, Rebecca has worked in Indigenous Recruitment, creating connections and advocating for Indigenous people while challenging colonial systems. She also shares her culture through her work as an Indigenous makeup artist, always leading with pride in her identity and community.
