The (FNUniv) and have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a collaborative partnership focused on Indigenous knowledges, transdisciplinary research, education, digital preservation, and community engagement.
Effective April 20, 2026, the agreement outlines opportunities for cooperation between the two institutions in areas including Indigenous data governance, digital archiving, educational exchanges, library and archival collaborations, and community-driven research initiatives.
A central focus of the partnership is the ethical preservation and protection of Indigenous oral histories, languages, traditions, and cultural materials through digitally sustainable and culturally responsive frameworks. The agreement emphasizes adherence to Indigenous data sovereignty principles and internationally recognized standards, including OCAP®, FAIR, and CARE principles.
“This partnership reflects a shared commitment to advancing Indigenous-led research, preserving Indigenous knowledge systems, and fostering meaningful collaboration grounded in respect and reciprocity,” said Dr. Jacqueline Ottmann, President of FNUniv.
The MOU also supports the development of joint digital archiving initiatives, student and faculty exchange opportunities, collaborative workshops and conferences, and training opportunities in digital preservation and archival practices for Indigenous scholars, librarians, and students.
As part of the agreement, the institutions will explore the creation of a cloud-based digital repository hosted on Canadian servers to support access to Indigenous studies primary sources while ensuring appropriate safeguards, security, and culturally informed access protocols are maintained.
The partnership also acknowledges ongoing work involving renowned Métis author, playwright, broadcaster, filmmaker, and Elder Maria Campbell, including efforts related to Mukurtu-level digitization and culturally responsive digital preservation practices.
The Memorandum of Understanding is in effect for five years and allows for future project-specific agreements between the two institutions.
