The Regina Police Service (RPS) returned to the First Nations University of Canada (FNUniv) Regina Campus for its largest Policing and Partnerships Career Fair to date. With 22 participating agencies from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta — including several First Nations Police Services — the November 19th event reflected a growing national need for police officers, first responders, and security professionals. “The event has grown because there is a real need across Canada,” explained Cst. Stuart Keshane, Indigenous Recruitment Liaison Officer with RPS and Career Fair Coordinator. “Agencies talk to each other, share what they’re seeing in recruitment, and that networking has helped this fair expand.” He added that many participating organizations continue to return because the fair “brings in a majority of Indigenous attendees and individuals who meet the requirements to apply.”
This year’s fair showcased policing, paramedic, security, and fire agencies — ranging from the Winnipeg, Brandon, and Edmonton Police Services to the Blood Tribe Police Service, File Hills Police Service, RCMP, and Saskatchewan Protective Services. Students explored a variety of career pathways, from frontline patrol to specialized roles such as K9, SWAT, School Resource programming, and plain-clothes investigative unit. According to Cst. Keshane, presenters encouraged students to “shop around” and compare agencies by asking about cost of living, salary, benefits, pensions, training lengths, and Indigenous recruitment initiatives. “In the end,” he said, “the best police service is the one that hires you.”
Student engagement remained strong, with high participation from FNUniv students, U of R and Saskatchewan Polytechnic Justice Studies students, and high school learners from the Law Enforcement and Criminology program. “Every year, students stop by, ask questions, and realize how many opportunities exist — especially for Indigenous applicants,” Cst. Keshane shared. Positive feedback from both agencies and attendees reaffirmed the event’s success. With steady interest and room to expand, RPS plans to continue growing the Policing and Partnerships Career Fair in future years.
