We are proud to highlight Solomon Ratt, a retired Associate Professor of Indigenous Languages at the First Nations University of Canada, who was recently featured in a CBC News article for his work preserving and sharing Cree stories.
For this project, Solomon collaborated with his granddaughter to bring Cree cultural hero Wisahkicahk’s stories to life through both language and illustration. The project allowed him to share teachings passed down from his mother while connected younger generations to Cree traditions.
Solomon’s lifelong dedication to Cree language revitalization and storytelling underscores the importance of intergenerational learning and the power of culture to guide, teach, and inspire.
Throughout his career at FNUniv, Solomon taught a wide range of courses in Cree language, grammar, literacy, creative writing, and oral tradition. He focused his research on Cree language studies, traditional stories, creative writing, and second language learning, helping generations of students develop both fluency and appreciation for Cree culture.
