Following the Annual Smudge Walk on September 24, the Regina Campus Student Association held the Late Tony Cote Welcome Back Traditional Powwow on the front lawn.
Over 200 students, staff, families, and community members came together on campus for an afternoon of dancing, singing, socializing, and celebration. The event’s grand entry started at 1:30 p.m. and included FNUniv executives, Student Association members, students, sponsors, and dancers. The Red Dog Drum group from Starblanket First Nation served as the Host Drum, with six drums in the lineup.
As part of this year’s powwow, the Student Association honoured the families of the late Jaali Sutherland-Weenie, the late Jeremy Brass, and the late Trevor Dubois, remembering their loved ones and their lasting connection to FNUniv as alumni. In honour of their loved ones, each family selected a special item to be presented as a meaningful tribute to their memory and legacy.
The family of the late Tony Cote was also present. Faye Cote, daughter of the late Tony Cote, and FNUniv staff expressed gratitude to the Student Association for continuing to honour the legacy of her late father, who was a significant contributor to SIFC/FNUniv.
As a thank you to each registered dancer and drum group, the Student Association provided each with a monetary gift.
Although the day began in the morning fog, it turned into a beautiful, hot day. Thank you to everyone who joined us for a wonderful welcome-back celebration for the students, and to everyone who helped make this year’s Late Tony Cote Welcome Back Traditional Powwow possible.
