Criteria

  • Applicants must be an Indigenous full-time or part-time student registered and attending the First Nations University of Canada.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in any of the following programs: Indigenous Language majors, or minors; enrolled in the Indigenous Language Revitalization academic program; FNUniv Extended Studies in First Nations Language, First 2 Nations Certificate in Indigenous Language I or II, or the FNUniv Certificate in Language Guardianship; students enrolled in the Bachelor of Indigenous Education program or Masters of Indigenous Language Revitalization program.
  • Minimum academic standing of applicant’s program.
  • Applicants can only receive this scholarship once per academic year.
  • Applicants must be a resident of Saskatchewan.

Background

The United Nations General Assembly (Resolution A/RES/74/135) proclaimed the period between 2022 and 2032 as the International Decade of Indigenous Languages to draw global attention to the critical situation of many Indigenous languages and to mobilize stakeholders and resources for their preservation, revitalization and promotion. The importance of protecting and revitalizing Indigenous languages in Canada was reiterated during the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada’s Symposium on Indigenizing Education hosted in Saskatchewan in summer 2022.

This biannual scholarship was established by the Government of Saskatchewan, Ministry of Advanced Education to support language acquisition for students at the First Nations University of Canada. This Scholarship will honour retired Indigenous Languages and Linguistics faculty member Solomon Ratt for his contributions over the last 35 years in the Cree language and literacy subject area.

Application Details

Applicants must submit a First Nations University of Canada General Scholarship Application package by the October 31 and February 28 deadline which includes:

  • A completed application form.
  • An unofficial copy of current transcripts.
  • A resume and cover letter indicating the reason for studying an Indigenous language and their interest in Indigenous Language Literacy and describe their personal language experience.
  • Two letters of reference, one from a source who can attest to the applicant’s ability in the Indigenous language.
  • The scholarship selection will be based on applicant letter and letters of reference, and applicants must meet the minimum academic requirements of the program.
